The text contains much more material than can be covered in one semester and perhaps even in two semesters. Thus instructors must pick and choose the methods they consider most important for their particular classes. With the exception that the introductory chapters should be read before considering the later chapters in each section the chapters are self-consistent and could be considered in any order. To keep the text to a reasonable length we have had to eliminate some methods such as polarimetry and circular dichroism and electron spin resonance spectroscopy (except for a brief discussion in Chapter 5) as well as suggested experiments. The chapter on chemical analysis of surfaces in the sixth edition has been integrated in part into Chapters 14 and 16 on X-ray methods and mass spectrometry in the seventh edition.

Indonesia earthquake: Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant not affected Chennai:  Work at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) was not affected in the wake of massive earthquake in Indonesia triggering fears of tsunami though the plant is "generally on alert," a top official said on Wednesday. "We received the alert from Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services in Hyderabad and we are generally on alert. But our work is continuing," M Kasinath Balaji, Site Director, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, told. He said the walls of KNPP are 7.5 m high and the plant itself is situated on a raised platform. Work at the plant started recently after several months of protests by anti-nuclear activist stalling the commissiong of its first unit.
