MY JOURNEY : TRANSFORMING DREAMS INTO ACTION

From a small boy growing up in Rameswaram, to becoming the country?s eleventh President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam?s life has been a tale of extraordinary determination, courage, perseverance and the desire to excel. In this series of anecdotes and profiles, Dr Kalam looks back on key moments in his past?some small and some momentous?and tells the reader how each of them inspired him profoundly. With warmth and affection, he talks about the people who left a deep impression on him as he was growing up and as an adult, and the lessons he drew from his interactions with them. He describes those who have been the closest to him?his father with his deep love of God, his mother and her great kindness, his mentors who helped shape his thoughts and outlook. There are heart-warming accounts here of his childhood years spent in a small town by the Bay of Bengal and the many struggles and sacrifices made on the path to becoming a scientist and then the President of India. Dr Kalam also writes about the times when failure and dejection nearly overtook him and how he prevailed over those obstacles by drawing strength from books and spirituality.
Nostalgic, honest, and deeply personal, My Journey is the story of a life as rich as it is unusual and the beautiful lessons to be learnt from it.

WINGS OF FIRE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The autobiography of the former President of India, Wings of Fire is a delicate examination of a pioneer who went on to become India’s Missile Man before taking up the Office of President.
Summary Of The Book
Wings Of Fire: An Autobiography, relates a story of finding the innate power locked in any individual and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam does much to inform and enlighten readers of his own quest in igniting this fire within him. Unfolding the story across seven episodes, the book begins with a preface and introduction. It then goes into an orientation that opens with a quote from Atharva Veda. From here on forth, the book begins retelling of the incidents and events that forged the man.
From his birth, childhood and education, Kalam expounds this part of his journey in the ‘orientation’ section of his book. His birthplace Rameswaram, his dalliances at Schwartz High School and Madras Institute of Technology, and his middle class background are all illustrated in poignant detail.
Then the book moves into the subsequent chapters of ‘Creation’ and ‘Propitiation’ before ending this expansive memoir at the ‘Contemplation’ section. All through the next section the book captures every facet of Kalam’s body of work. His recollections of Langley, NASA and his experiences at Wallops Flight Facility. The death of his father and the conferment of the Padma Bhushan in 1981 are all recollected in the chapter ‘Creation’.
The later chapters cover his time as a visionary scientist. He recounts his role and leadership in the guided missile development program as also with the development of five formidable missiles, Agni, Nag, Akash, Prithvi and Trishul. All these accomplishments finally led Kalam to be called the “Missile Man of India” as success enveloped his huge efforts.
Wings Of Fire: An Autobiography is illustrated with 24 photographs taken at different points in his life with each photo chronicling a certain stage in his notable life. The book has been translated to many Indian languages as well as Braille, Chinese and French. It is a bestseller and its reception and success had Kalam turning back to the writing desk to write his sequel Turning Points.

TURNING POINTS: A JOURNEY THROUGH CHALLENGES

Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges picks up where Wings of Fire finished.
Summary Of The Book
This book, Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges, takes up the story from when A.P.J Abdul Kalam became the President of India. It covers his acceptance of the post of the President of India, his term in office, his efforts to make his term meaningful, and the challenges he faced.
His term from 2002 to 2007 was an eventful one. The President of India is just a titular head with minimal powers. But, the office is one of great influence and Kalam used it to best effect. He got the government and the public to focus on issues that were relevant to the country's all round growth.
He initiated programs like PURA to try and integrate rural areas into the general economic and technological growth of the country. He dreamt of taking the whole of India on his vision for the country in the new millennium, and he saw no reason why the villages should be left out in this vision.
Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges is more about Kalam’s vision for his country rather than about himself. He tries to provide a blueprint for development, and for reforms in the government and judiciary.
Dr.Kalam is a strong advocate for the use of technology and a proponent of e-governance. Even the little bits of personal experience during his term that he gives, he links with these ideas. For instance, he mentions the controversial dissolution of the Bihar assembly for which he later offered to resign. But, he does not focus on the political or personal implications of this decision, instead, he chose to highlight his use of electronic communication in lending his approval to this move, for he was in Moscow at that time.
He made the office of the President accessible to the public. He used his popularity and high visibility to inspire the youth of the country and convince them to believe in his 2020 vision for India. He urged the young people to dream big, and to believe in their country's destiny. Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges describes the term in office of one of the most charismatic Presidents of the country.

Ignited Minds : Unleashing The Power Within India, written by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, is about the underutilization of resources in India and how such potential can be tapped.
Summary Of The Book

Why is the country still struggling with a developing economy? Ignited Minds : Unleashing The Power Within India aims to answer these questions and more. Kalam also speaks of visionaries such as J. R.
D. Tata and Satish Dhawan. The author focuses on how such wisdom will help the country develop. He urges readers to change their mindset by looking at the present situation with an open mind. The book talks about the risks that need to be taken, the technology that has to be utilized and the dedication for the country that must be present to actually unleash the power of the mind for the benefit of the country.

He has highlighted the basic concerns deemed as unnecessary in relation to the dire problems facing the country.
The eleven chapters of the book transcend religion and provides an unbiased view of the country and the probable solutions. It aims at exploring the hidden potential of the people by changing the belief system and bringing the country on the winning track. The book was first published in 2002.

TARGET 3 BILLION: INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

"With 750 million people living in villages, India has the largest rural population in the world. Based on his Indian experience, Dr Kalam recommends a sustainable and inclusive development system called PURA—Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas—to uplift the rural masses not by subsidies but through entrepreneurship with community participation. To make his case, Dr Kalam cites the examples of individuals and institutions, in India and from across the world, who, with an entrepreneurial spirit and a burning desire to make a difference, have successfully generated and tapped into the potential of the rural masses. Fabio Luiz de Oliveira Rosa changed the face of the rural district of Palmares, Brazil, by acquiring for the farmers access to electricity and water, which effect combined with better agricultural methods led to an increase in prosperity and stemmed the migration to the cities The 123-strong Magar clan owned Magarpatta, a 430-acre plot on the outskirts of Pune, Maharashtra. In the 1990s, they organized and set up the Magarpatta city which is now home to over 35,000 residents and a working population of 65,000, and boasts of an IT park. "

NDIA 2020 : A VISION FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM 1ST EDITION

In India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, our most distinguished scientist, and close associate Y.S. Rajan examine India's strengths—and weaknesses—to offer a vision of how India can be among the world's first five economic powers in the year 2020. They cite growth rates and develoent trends to show that the goal is not an unrealistic one. Past successes, too, bear them out. For example, we were able to launch the green revolution at a time when experts had all but given up on India ever becoming self-sufficient in food. Similarly, in the field of space technology we started from scratch to have today a system of satellite-based communication linking remote regions of the country. The same sense of purpose can lead us to success in many other areas crucial to achieving the goal of a prosperous, strong nation, assert Kalam and Rajan.

8.YOU ARE BORN TO BLOSSOM

YOU ARE BORN TO BLOSSOM

This book is an account of how Dr. Kalam visualizes Information and Communication Technology mining the rural talent. Here, Dr. Kalam presents his dream: of schools in India at 2020 as symbiotic nerve centres connecting teachers, students and community; personifying knowledge that exists in the world. He also makes a clarion call to accelerate the process of societal transformation. This would involve raising the standards of governance and safeguarding the sanctity of public institutions. The book uses the metaphor of a tree to describe the process of knowledge bearing fruits of prosperity in the contemporary globalised world where different phases, formative, adult working life, and post-50 experienced senior citizens, call for different kinds of learning. The book refers to a contextual contribution of a large number of Indian scientists and artists and proves that there is no age bar to blossom. He advocates creation of conditions that favour growth of diverse individual talents akin to a garden and calls for a scientific mind-set guided by conscience, consensus and by actions that take our social and moral values into account in building our own systems.
